New arrivals and a few more cards are on the way!

What a truly remarkable set of cards comprises the 1953 Bowman Color Base Ball Series. The pure beauty of the crystal clear fronts and the rich text on the reverse makes for one terrific effort by Bowman to produce this glorious set.

A few Boston Braves cards I really like are the Sam Jethroe and Sid Gordon cards. I like these two in-particular because the beautiful images of these stars in the old Boston National League Braves uniforms is quite stunning. I grew up on stories of my Dad & his brother, James,  attending Braves games in Boston as well as Red Sox games in the 40's! My card buddies that were of my Dad's generation, Charlie Anderson, George Altison (both also from Marlboro) as well as pals Stanley Block and Al Aaronson all told me of those glorious days when Boston had two teams!

I picked up the Jethroe and Gordon. I also added a few other decent common cards, but my big trade is a deal for the Reese, Snider and Feller that will be completed next week. Once again, I got confused from my medicine routine, felt sick, and in the process I lost a week. I'm sure it will work out, as the guys I made deals with are the same great guys I've been buying from right along, and we are always going to do business. I feel embarrassed tht my illness has directly affected my ability to be prompt. I suppose I'm fortunate if that's the biggest side-effect I've gotten.

Now for some pics of the 53's!

Enjoy and please comment.

Thanks,

Bill

This week's additions!

I was fortunate to purchase a PSA2  card of Duke Snider. It has strong eye appeal and will fit nicely into the set.

More cards are on the horizon this week! My good friend Jeff Weisenberg is working on rounding up a bunch in a part trade/part cash deal later in the week.

Recent purchases for the coming week include some really nice cards from my friend Neal in Florida.

I'll keep you posted with scans as I add to the set. Enjoy your weekend!

Nellie Fox and leo Durocher arrive on Columbus Day.

I was surprised the UPS was delivering on Columbus Day. i got my package of auction winnings from Kevin Savage cards.
A very good and well centered Nellie Fox card #18 and a very good not so well centered Leo Durocher are the newest additions to the project.

A very nice pose of Fox about to throw in a  ChicagoWhite Sox uniform shows a vacant stadium behind him. I wonder what park it is! The Durocher card is a nice smiling pose of Leo managing the N.Y. Giants.

These are on their way to PSA soon to get slabbed 3's most likely.

Speaking of PSA, UPS brought my PSA storage boxes today. Very nice black vinyl 2 piece boxes that I ordered from their web site after I finished logging in all my inventory last week. I love the inventory storage options that PSA and SCG offer.
I have over 50 new PSA cards to enter and that's my work for the morning. All the cards are nice vintage cards.

Wednesday I'm hoping to secure the Musial, Campanella and 5 others!

1953 Bowman cards of the past

I was tracking down some sales from my store in Framingham in 1980 thru 1983 and found out who bought some of the early Bowman sets I had made in the 1970's.
I sold a full run of 1948 thru 1955 Bowman sets to a guy in Michigan back in 1980. Jim was his name and he introduced me to Kevin Savage from Ohio who I still do business with these days. The sets were crisp, I mean very mint. The entire deal was sold to him for 4500.00!
I also sold a 1953 Bowman color set (along with many other sets) to Howard Weisenberg from TV 27 and his pal Steve Rotman from Rotman Furniture. Bernie Tarr, a VP at Paine-Webber, also got a few sets of early Bowman cards in 1983.

In 1984 I got a lead through my parents and purchased over 1500 Topps and Bowman cards mostly from 1952 and 1953.
I sold all the high number 1952's to Bob Ochs in NJ. The Mantle's all went to Ken Maltese and Stan Block. However, George Altison from my hometown bought all the 53 Bowman cards. Mel Simons, local entertainer, also made a very substantial trade for the balance of the cards with the hottest music albums of the day. Everyone went wild over this gem mint lot of early cards by Topps and Bowman.

Every Spring and Fall Bob Thing and I set up at the Willow Grove, PA show. The 1953 Bomnans sold better than any other card and the grade did not matter as long as they were priced accordingly.

What's everyone's favorite card in the set? The most popular is the Pee Wee Reese card. Walt from Fenway Sports single handedly petitioned to get Pee Wee into the Hall of Fame.

In closing, I wish there was a Hank Aaron, Al Kaline and Ernie Banks in this set. There are "archive cards" of them printed in the 1990's. A truly nice way to add them in a not expensive way!

1953 Bowman Color BB Card set started

I have always admired the 1953 Bowman Color BB card set ever since my Father gave me some of the cards when I was eight years old. The beautiful color photos of the players are stunning. Long ago my Father had this complete set and in my many years as a collector, dealer and convention planner many of these cards have passed through my hands. Today, October 6, 2010 I have decided to make a complete set.
I am assembling this project with cards that are graded by PSA and SCG as well as "raw". However, I plan to eventually complete the series in graded form with the best grades I can find and afford.
My current holdings are as follows:
#31 Jimmy Dykes PSA 5  This Philadelphia Athletics Manager shows the vintage flannel uniform of a long ago team.
#49 Eddie Stanky PSA 3  This St. Louis Cardinal Manager shows the smiling face of Eddie.
#80 Ralph Kiner   PSA 4  This Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder is a legendary Hall of Famer with numerous batting awards.
